Chess.com Square Labels

This userscript displays algebraic square labels (a1–h8) directly on the Chess.com board.

The labels are rendered inside each square, automatically adjust when the board is flipped, and apply different opacity settings for dark and light squares.
The script is strictly visual-only and does not interact with gameplay, moves, clocks, or analysis.

What this script does

  • Renders square coordinates (a1–h8) on every board square
  • Automatically updates when the board is flipped
  • Uses separate opacity values for dark and light squares
  • Saves settings locally using Tampermonkey storage
  • Works in games, analysis, and puzzles

Floating control panel

When enabled, a draggable control panel appears that lets you:

  • Adjust dark-square opacity
  • Adjust light-square opacity
  • Temporarily disable labels
  • Reset to default values

The panel position is saved automatically.

Disable the floating panel (labels only)

If you want labels without the UI panel, edit the script and set:

const customize = false;

When the UI panel is disabled, square labels would still appear but the panel won't show up again.

Isn't this cheating?

Thankfully, nope. I confirmed with a moderator on the forums before I published this script, feel free to use it and it shouldn't be accounted for cheating. Here is the proof of the moderator approving this script:
