This script adds a select dropdown to the HN header bar, containing options for sorting the stories posted on the main (index) page:

  • auto: Sort by a combination of votes and comments (both can optionally be weighted). This keeps the most active stories near the top; useful if you don't visit HN every couple of hours or so.
  • votes: Sort by votes on posts (descending).
  • comments: Sort by number of comments (descending).
  • newest: Sort by age (descending).
  • oldest: Sort by age (ascending).
  • rank: Original HN sorting.

The last selected sorting option is saved to localStorage and recalled when the page is loaded again.
