< Feedback on Blinkist "Today's Free Blink" text scraper
there's no START AUTO-SCRAPER button
Hi, thanks for giving the script a try and your feedback.
I updated the script. Please try the newest version once more (v0.3).
The button "START AUTO-SCRAPER" is now yellow. you should see the button at the top center of your page window after the blink of the day page has completed loading.
If it still should not work for you with this version, what browser are you using, in which version and do you get a console log error by any chance?
Thanks!
Hi scr1pst3r
thanks for the update, I've just updated to 0.4 and I don't see a yellow button
I'll attach the screenshot, btw I use the very recent version of FF 101.0.1, updated 30 minutes ago.
actually I don't want the free blinks of the day, I've downloaded about 4500 blinks with the Blinkist to PDF script here on greasyfork, but the script doesn't work with the recent changes in the source code.
but thanks for the effort and the quick reply
Hi Mehran Esen,
thanks for your feedback and the info about your setup.
I simplified the script so that it should start automatically with the text scraping if the script is active during the page visit.
The console now contains info about each step for better debugging like:
scraper script: starting in 2 seconds
scraper script: text segment x added
scraper script: text complete:
xxx
Could you give this latest version (v0.5) a final try? I hope it works now for you.
Thanks!
Hi, thanks for the update
I will try tomorrow again, today I couldn't download anything, because my FF is in Croatian and I don't understand anything (wanna learn!)
But the script seems to be working, still no yellow button.
Hi, no problem that you don't see the extra start script button ("START AUTO-SCRAPER") from the previous script version - I removed this button and the other one ("COPY" button) - the script should start automatically now as soon as you enter the first section page (e.g. "Introduction") of the blink of the day.
Every two seconds the script jumps through the section pages and when the last section is reached a popup with the complete text should show up.
If this does not happen for you and you don't see the popup window with the completed text at the end and if you don't see any messages in the console log then it means that the auto-start of the script does not work for you for some reason. Did you have similar problems with other scripts in the past that they did not start automatically or did you do some modifications in the settings of your Tampermonkey browser plugin or in the settings of this script that might override any of the standard functionalities? Other browser plugins might also interfere but I tested it with ad blockers running in parallel for example and that did not have a negative effect on the execution of this script.
Hi again
Sorry, I was busy yesterday and I missed 0.6.
In the new update the text works, it opens a windows and you can print it to any format you want (which is great, because I can print as epub). but no audio and not the other message I saw in 0.5. I will check the script with Vivaldi Browser again.
Are we going to have this great extension for the premium version too?
Hey, thanks for the feedback - great that it is working for you now!
I removed the extra popup with the links to the audio files in order to make the usability of the script simpler.
But if you find the audio files useful as well, I will try to think of a different way (instead of an additional popup because they might get blocked in Chrome) to show them again in an upcoming version.
I currently don't have a premium Blinkist account anymore so that I can not test and modify the script for the premium blink sites at the moment, sorry.
Update in v0.8: Links to the audio files of the segments are now listed in the top right corner of the page.
I really like your approach, I will use it to print as epub, thanks <3
You are welcome! :) Out of curiosity: What is your workflow when you save epub files? Are you using a printer driver/extension that lets you print/save websites to epub directly from your browser? Or are you saving the website text as a pdf/txt/doc file and then convert into an epub file with calibre for example?
I've heard good things about Calibre. I've used it before to open epub, but not as a virtual printer for it. In that case you can print it directly from your browser or a file.
