Character encoding

I downloaded some French subtitles and all the accented characters are gibberish. I'm guessing this is a character encoding issue because if I open them in Firefox and switch it to Unicode, everything looks right. I wasn't sure if this were an option I couldn't access, but since you said you're removing options altogether, it's a moot point.

Examples:

'Je l'ai rappelé.' displays as 'Je l'ai rappelé.'

'[♪♪♪]' displays as '[♪♪♪]'

Files are encoded in UTF-8 without BOM. I just tested Polish and German subs. After batch converting them in Subtitle Edit they are still encoded in UTF-8 but this time with BOM.

I'm almost certain it's the same with French subs. Don't know what you're using to open those subs but Notepad++ shows correct text and encoding.

This is in both Firefox (until I switch encoding via the View menu) and Wordpad on Win7.

(added .txt to the filename because it doesn't like .srt)

First of all you're still using old version of the script that converts .xml subs to .srt (and adds "subs downloaded with" line at the end). New one downloads .vtt subs and doesn't change anything.

Subs open fine with Notepad++ as UTF-8 without BOM.
