You second person who talk about it. I see no problem to fix it or add alternative behaviour via settings, but I not much understand the point of issue. It's default behaviour to open posts in same tab as I know. To open in new tab usualy used MMB.
Did you mean that the script brokes some other scripts or it was feature from the old/legacy design? More details would be helpfull.
