I'll try to replicate this.
Until then, if you don't care about your cookie you can clear them to get a new set, and a possibility to see the previous layout.
I have tested on 4 x 20 sets of cookies and I'm unable to replicate your problem.
It doesn't rule out a new test by google, but check if you haven't added/enabled a userscript, or another userstyle, or an extension which targets google search sites.
