Problem:

I must admit, I had Youtube addiction for a long time. As soon as I enter youtube and want to relax for a couple of minutes, I see the home page suggestions, and then I go into the rabbit hole for hours. I don't want a place designed to distract you and waste your time, I want a website that encourages productivity. If only it was possible to force myself to watch educational/useful/relevant content that would make me a smarter person and inspire me to work harder...
There is, often ignored by me, a category selection feature on Youtube home page, but I rarely used them because it requires you to switch to a category every time you go back to the home page. And even when I do, I have already been spoiled by the default Youtube recommendations.
If only there was a more effective system...

Solution:

This script hides undesired categories and selects desired ones randomly. By default, youtube's category selected is always "All". Instead of hiding the entire home feed like some scripts do (like Unhook Youtube), I chose to utilize youtube's category selection feature. It hides any initial Youtube recommendations until the script selects a category.

How to use:

  • ➣ Just add your desired categories to the "var categories = " list inside the script and that's it. You can see my added categories there as an example.
  • You can see the categories hidden on Youtube home page by the script in the Chrome developer tool console, just search for: "YOUTUBE_CATEGORIES: hidden categories:".
  • When Youtube doesn't provide any categories that match your category list, you can search for the category manually until youtube does provide such recommendations (I tested it without and account on Youtube, it worked for me after I searched for the category once).
