Reading Fluency Tips for Parents

Reading fluently allows readers to understand what they are reading. But how can parents help their child read more fluently at home? There are many ways that parents can help kids improve they're writing a research paper and reading fluency skills at home.

Read to Your Child:
The best way to learn how to read fluency is by listening to fluent readers daily. Read to your child every day. Read the different types of genres. Your child will enjoy listening to short stories, picture books, poems or chapter books. Exposing your child to a variety of literature will not only help their oral reading fluency but it will also deepen their love for literature.

Read Together:
Reading to your child is one thing but reading together is another great way for your child to build their fluency. Reading the same text in unison helps build oral reading fluency. You can read the same passage at the same time or take turns reading. While you are reading together be sure to model good reading habits such as pausing in between sentences and phrases.

Rhythmic Books:
Give your child books with a variety of rhythmic patterns or predictable language. This will give your child the opportunity to listen to the sound of fluent reading when they read these rhythmic stories or poems.

Read It Again:
Encourage your child to read their favorite books and poems over and over again. The repetitive nature of reading the same book, again and again, builds fluency. This improves reading with expression and their reading will become smoother and more fluent.

Read Words and Phrases:
Provide your child with a select list of words or phrases for them to practice. Have them read these words or phrases over and over. Model reading these words or phrases for your child. This exercise builds speed and accuracy.

Pick An Emotion:
Ask your child to read a passage, poem or short story with a specific emotion. For example, tell them they are going to read a poem about a happy event. They must read the poem with a happy tone. They must exhibit a happy expression while reading the entire poem. They will enjoy acting out this emotion while reading the poem.

In order for children to comprehend what they are reading they must be able to read fluently. Parents can promote reading fluency at home by reading to their children and with their children. Building fluency takes time but with continued practice your child will be reading fluently and enjoying the reading process.
