Peacock and HBO Max Subtitle Downloaders

§
Posted: 2021-02-02

Hi there, it could be great if someone can make scripts to download the subtitles from both streaming sites.

I checked an HBO Max video and the subtitles are stored in an .xml file, usually called "sdh.xml" and sometimes "sub.xml".

As for Peacock, I couldn't find were the subtitles are getting sourced from. It seems to have a similar structure to Hulu, in the way it handles subtitles.

Cheers!

I don't have an account on these websites, so if you give me your password I'm almost sure that I can make the userscript for HBO, I'm just not sure about the Peacock website.

HBOMax has changed the structure of the subtitles recently, now it looks something like:

100.vtt
200.vtt
300.vtt

The subtitles are in parts, there is no link that shows the complete subtitles, you can review and make a HBOMax script, I can give you my account.

@raylink

Please send me your account info privately then, btw I'm very busy recently so I will take a good amount of time until I can really take time to look into it.

@hacker09 you still need some login information for HBO max??

@NiDHUG

Yes, a long time ago someone gave me their login info, I tried to make the script but I had to download a VPN software and change my DNS and other stuff, since HBO was blocked in my country at that time, but now I've changed countries and I hope that HBO isn't blocked in a few countries now.

I tried to make this script at that time, but although I could login in their website, I could not see any videos, so I could not try to do anything, maybe with your login info, I will finally be able to at least see the videos and see if I can code this, depending on how hard or easy it is.

Wow, this script works perfectly for HBO Max, not sure if it can be used on other services, as I saw it has mentions of D+, P+ and such on the code.
One change HAS to be made before using it tho, you've to remove the "/fixcommonerrors" bit from hbomax.py (line 700), as it messes up the order and length of double lines. It's better to use the batch option from Subtitle Edit after ripping the subs and use the "Merge lines with the same timecodes" option, unless there's a way to include it on the hbomax.py code (instead of the "/fixcommonerrors").

@Ronald Da Silva In the file hbomax.py replace fixcommonerrors with MergeSameTimeCodes.

Thank you! I was about to suggest the same fix, as I was doing some tests with the code.

I tried replacing "/RemoveFormatting" with the separate options from from SE (RemoveFormattingBold, RemoveFormattingItalic, RemoveFormattingUnderline, RemoveFormattingColor, RemoveFormattingFontName,RemoveFormattingAlignment) in order to remove everything except the italics, but to no avail. It seems that SE doesn't support picking the options separately, which is weird considering other parts of the program have that option (like Fix Common Errors).

This might be done by using MultipleReplace and a regular expression instead of RemoveFormatting, but I did not test it yet, send to me a subtitle file and I will try, and the link of the video.

I found a more permanent solution, I looked through the code of SE in GitHub and found the file which handles the RemoveFormatting option (called HtmlUtil.cs), then I deleted the part which removes the italic symbols , but only from the Remove All Format option (the separate Remove Italics option still works). Finally, I made a custom compilation of SE and it worked perfectly.

You only need to drag-and-drop the contents of the .zip inside the binaries folder, then replace everything when asked. Make a backup of the original folder, in case you want to revert the changes.

Not working. EU subs are direct VTT files. Not like for US customers XML file.
Here look on structure mpd file for subs in US and EU: https://mega.nz/file/XU4FBCwC#EbVJ77L5Pdyw8uWO2cGCJGngXaWgIGemuBQeyQkkMQI

Hi there.

I uploaded two versions, the OG one that was posted earlier on and a custom one by me. I suggest to use the custom one, as in the vanilla version, most lines get incorrect timecodes when merged. I also made a custom build of Subtitle Edit, in order for the italics to be kept after the conversion.

OG version: https://mega.nz/file/G94l2S7S#W6DH5wr3pW0f9PqhTVJo1D0q5TCxgrZzHKu2CaCIz-U

Hey Ronald Da Silva, thanks for the effort. I downloaded the "Custom Version" and followed Step 1 to 5 as instructed. Unfortunatly download.subtitles.bat says "No Subtitles available" although that ist not true.

After the launch of HBO Max in Europe, the format of the subs in some series and movies in HBO Max USA were switched to a single .vtt file, instead of splitting them into multiple .vtt files (like reported above). The script was made only taking the multiple .vtt files format in mind, so it needs to be modified to add support for single .vtt files. That's also the reason why the script isn't working with HBO Max Europe (which used single .vtt files from the start).

I assume the process to make the script support single .vtt files should be similar, although, I looked at the code and couldn't find a way so far. At the moment, I'm using IDM to download single .vtt files, as it captures the subs when playing a content in HBO Max.

Thanks for your remarks. But in my case they do not apply. I wanted to download subtitles from an episode of the Comedy Half-Hour on the US-Version of HBO Max. I am using NordVPN to get access. I checked the subtitle format by activating the developer tool. It were splitted vtt-files. In the meantime I also downloaded the OG-Version. It doesn't work as well. I then downloaded a test version of anystream. Anystream succesfully downloaded the subtitles I wanted. But downloads are limited to 10 in the free version.

I'm having the same issue aswell. HBO Max seems to be changing how it handles subtitles frequently, most likely due to the new countries getting added over time.

At the moment, both the US and Latin American regions use .vtt subtitles split in multiple parts, while Europe uses single .vtt subtitles. It could be great to have an updated script supporting both versions, as the older ones only supported one at a time (when they still worked).
